Mentorship
VAST Mentorship Program
Our mentorship program runs January - December. Registration for 2025 mentorship is now open, please register via this link.
Mentorship is defined as the influence, guidance, or direction given by a mentor. A mentor may help with exploring careers, setting goals, developing contacts, and identifying resources.
Our goal is to match trainees where applicable (and wanted) with academic faculty (i.e., a VAST co-investigator or collaborator), a senior peer mentor, and/or a non-academic mentor (i.e., industry/non-profit/community partner, clinician).
In order to facilitate matches based on expectations upon time, career goals, and professional interests, please fill out the registration survey above. Please continue the form until you see the message "We thank you for your time spent taking this survey. Your response has been recorded." Incomplete entries will not be considered. The basic expectation for mentees signing up in this program is getting in touch with your assigned mentor. At a minimum, if you feel that you aren't sure what to ask or talk about, or no longer have the time in your schedule to include this, to get in touch to let your mentor know. The basic expectation for mentors signing up in this program is to respond to your mentee introduction email. Mentees can also sign up to be senior peer mentors. Trainees are considered as individuals registered in undergraduate, master’s, doctoral, or postdoctoral programs, as well as early career researchers that are within 5 years of an appointed academic position.
Effective mentorship relationships have clear expectations and communication. . We will hold an introduction and workshop on January 11 (info to come) for both mentors and mentees to better understand how to get the most out of their mentorship relationships. We also aim to hold group sessions throughout the year. We will collect feedback at mid-point and at the end of the year to continuously improve the program.
If you experience challenges throughout the program, feel your match is inappropriate, or otherwise have questions about the program expectations, please contact Liam Harrison - liam.harrison1@ucalgary.ca.
VAST Mentorship Highlights
Zainab Mianoor (MSc student) and Sarah Gagliano Taliun (Assistant Professor)
“Sarah is an amazing mentor. I plan to keep in touch with her outside of the program as she has provided so much insight. Through this program, I got to connect with a mentor outside of my scope for a possible future collaboration and received so much, from help in guidance in my future plans to reference letters.” - Zainab Mianoor
“Zainab and I met ~4 times this year. I looked forward hearing about her updates and doing my best to support. It was really nice to meet her in person for the first time at the VAST conference this past spring! The main benefit for me in this program is community building!” - Sarah Gagliano Taliun
Faye Arellano (undergraduate student) and Karl Grewal (PhD student)
“This mentorship program was really beneficial in guiding my journey toward applying to graduate school. My mentor’s advice for the GRE exams, strengthening my application, and getting more research involvement was really valuable. As I apply to graduate programs, I receive ongoing support from my mentor Karl, which includes providing resources for my letter of intent, and reviewing my CV, making my preparation for this endeavour significantly easier.” - Faye Arellano
“Participating in VAST mentorship was a very fulfilling experience. I felt fortunate to be able to provide guidance and pass on my experiences to the next generation of graduate students, as I would not be where I am today without the help of past mentors. It was also an excellent opportunity to create a network and reflect on my own journey!” - Karl Grewal
Ateyeh Soroush (PhD student) and Edith Hamel (Professor)
“Having Edith as my mentor was an honor. She is a humble individual who discussed the intricacies and untapped potential of my project with me. Additionally, she provided valuable advice on maintaining a healthy work-life balance. I am deeply grateful for all her guidance and support.” - Ateyeh Soroush
“Happy to learn that the mentorship program has benefits to those who use it. It has been a pleasure for me to be able to meet and discuss with Ateyeh!” - Edith Hamel
Sajeevan Sujanthan (PhD student) and Jaspreet Bhangu (Assistant Professor, Geriatrician)
“Dr. Jaspreet Bhangu was wonderful! We had talked initially via email, and then I had the chance to meet him at the VAST conference during the summer. He was very helpful in providing me tips for how to get the most out of my PhD. In addition, as a clinician, he had also provided me some tips on what I should be highlighting for my med school application after my PhD. I look forward to staying in touch with Dr. Bhangu, as I feel that I can learn a lot from him.” - Sajeevan Sujanthan
“Working as a mentor with VAST was a great opportunity to meet new trainees. I was able to have a one on one meeting with Sajeevan, see his impressive work to date, and provide some advice for future directions. By meeting in person at the VAST conference it allowed us to veer into discussions outside of research, and into life and career advice.” - Jaspreet Bhangu
Stéfanie Tremblay (PhD student) and Simone Duchesne (Professor)
“This mentorship experience exceeded my expectations. I was lucky to meet with Simone in person at conferences (unplanned) and have several informal discussions about research, the field of dementia, career prospects, etc. He also introduced me to a lot of people that are really relevant for me to have. He helped me in the planning of an event I’m organizing (panel discussion on dementia prevention) and he will even participate as one of the panelists. I think it was a great match so the mentorship grew beyond the program because of shared interests, attending same conferences, etc. Overall very satisfied :)” - Stéfanie Tremblay
“The benefits for me are the same as always - a chance to give back. Happy to have helped confirm Stéfanie’s choice for a career path.” - Simone Duchesne
Jasmine Aziz (PhD student) and Jodie Gawryluk (Associate Professor)
“Jodie Gawryluk is an excellent mentor. Very down to Earth, I felt comfortable asking my questions about career path and various considerations. She is an outstanding role model for professional wellness and it was valuable to hear that perspective. This program helped me build my professional network and connected me with people in my area of training. I’m excited to have two more PIs to say hi to at conferences and potentially collaborate with in future!” - Jasmine Aziz
“I really enjoyed meeting with Jasmine to discuss her career stage and future goals. We had overlapping experiences and interests and it was an absolute treat to meet her! I would be happy to connect with Jasmine again any time to offer my support.” - Jodie Gawryluk
Thao Nguyen (PhD student) and Sandi Azab (Postdoctoral Research Associate)
“It is easy to feel lonely in research, that you are facing unique problems nobody else understands, and that everyone else is stronger, smarter, and more successful than you are. These feelings are sometime hard to share with the closest peers in your research group. I am grateful for knowing Sandi via this mentorship program. With her kindness, Sandi has shared with me her life and professional experience. She has provided encouraging advice for different stages of my thesis as well as future career planning. The experience went beyond a mentorship and I look forward to continuing our professional connection and friendship into the future.” - Thao Nguyen
“It was truly refreshing to listen to Thao’s aspirations and see her energy. We have developed a trusting mentorship and a friendship after the conference. I had suggested some tools for career development and planning to stay in touch. Overall this is a unique program of caring mentorship and my experiences both as mentor and mentee was very positive.” - Sandi Azab
